Kirby Sattler (American Indian)

Kirby Sattler was born in 1950 , his work in inspired by Joseph Campbell and  his interest in human cultures along side his realistic painting style . The difference between my work and Kirby Sattler's work is that he avoids 'Adhering to historical accuracy '' . He only paints from his view point which is his ''innate interest in the worlds indigenous cultures '' . The Statement Kirby Sattler released below backs up my opinion and my theory of his work .


He uses symbols of rituals which are important to the Native Americans in his pieces .


Kirby Sattler released the following statement about his work;


"My paintings are interpretations based upon the nomadic tribes of the 19th century American Plains. The subjects are a variety of visual references and my imagination. I am not a historian, nor an ethnologist. Being of non-native blood, without personal history, it would be presumptuous to portray the subject I paint from any other view than as an artist with an innate interest in the world’s indigenous cultures. I purposely do not denote a tribal affiliation to the majority of my subjects, rather, I attempt to give the paintings an authentic appearance, provoke interest, satisfy my audience’s sensibilities of the subject without the constraints of having to adhere to historical accuracy"



Kirby Campbell's work links to mine as he adds symbols to his work which interprets his opinion which is the same as my work and also because he has done his work on American Indians .

<<This is an illustration I did in pencil , white chalk and charcoal based on an American Indian photograph I found , which I changed by adding faded American Indian Patterns to symbolize the depression of the Native American Indian Tribes .My drawing both links in the fact that me and the artist have both produced the work with hidden messages based on the Tribes . The difference between our work is that I have used different techniques , materials and processes and also my work is intended to be used on the back of a jacket . His painting is more skilled and affective however , because his has been done in oil paint .

In this piece Kirby Sattler has portrayed the connection between the Native Americans and animals . Because the American Indians were very in touch with nature and animals spiritually .
